Eavestrough vs. Gutter: What’s the Difference?
Nothing really, just two names for the same system. Americans typically use the term “gutter” more than us Canadians who’ve historically used “eavestroughs”. Regardless, both eavestroughs and gutters refer to the channels that direct rainwater off your roof and away from your home.
Leaf Filter Systems & Gutter Protection
Alu-Rex Gutter Guards For Your Peace of Mind

I'm writing this review because they were so important to us when trying to find a company to replace all of our soffit, facia, eaves and downspouts.. It was apparent that this company was providing a well regarded product and people were very happy with the service. They did not disappoint.

Communication was excellent, and they were able to fit us in before the winter season was in full swing, saving us from another winter of excessive salting in the areas where we had melting/leaking/pooling/freezing..
The double membrane keeps debris from getting inside the gutter. The offset holes make it the perfect filter, allowing water to drain freely while blocking pine needles and leaves without ever getting clogged.
The suction created by the two membranes increases the drainage capacity to three times the volume of the heaviest storms, allowing the lower membrane to draw water through larger perforations. This provides a drainage capacity of 40.6 in (1,031 mm) of water per hour per linear foot.
FAQs: Gutter Installation & Protection in Ontario
Finding the right eavestrough replacement and gutter installation information can be overwhelming. You’re in the right place.
1. How much does gutter installation cost in Ontario?
Eavestrough/gutter installation costs depend on the size of your home, the number of stories, and the materials used. Every home is unique and depending on the size and project, more (or less) materials and time is required. We provide free, detailed estimates for our Canadian-sourced aluminum eavestroughs with no obligation so you know exactly what to expect.
2. What’s the average cost of eavestrough replacement?
The cost of a full eavestrough replacement depends on your home’s layout and whether you want to add gutter guard leaf protection. Canadian-sourced aluminum gutters alongside a system like Alu-Rex’s T-Rex® or DoublePro™ will increase the value and lifespan of the install (and your home). It’s worth every penny.
3. Is seamless gutter installation really better?
Yes. Seamless gutters reduce leaks, improve curb appeal, and last longer than sectional systems. Since there are no joints along the run, there are fewer weak points where leaks can form over time. We will custom-fit our eavestroughs to your home with hand-mitred corner
4. What size gutters are best for Ontario homes?
We install 5″ or 6″ aluminum gutters, but most homes benefit from the larger 6″ size (especially during storms or freeze-thaw cycles when flow capacity matters most).
5. Do I need gutter guard installation near trees or heavy foliage?
Absolutely. Gutter protection systems like the Gutter Clean System® keep out leaves, seeds, and shingle grit, which saves you hours of cleanup while preventing clogs that can lead to overflow and foundation damage.
6. Can I add gutter guards to existing gutters?
Yes. We install the Alu-Rex Gutter Clean System®, designed specifically for upgrading existing systems with modern protection.
7. What’s the difference between gutter covers and gutter guards?
They’re often used interchangeably. “Gutter guard” is a general term, while “gutter cover” typically refers to a solid-surface system. We recommend perforated aluminum guards, like T-Rex® or DoublePro™, because they allow water in but block everything else so you don’t get warping, cracking, or collapsing.
8. Is it worth installing vinyl or copper gutters?
Vinyl is budget-friendly but not recommended for Ontario’s climate because it cracks easily in the cold. Copper gutters are beautiful and long-lasting but significantly more expensive. We find aluminum eavestroughs with Alu-Rex protection strike the best balance between price, durability, and performance.
9. How can I tell if my gutters need to be replaced?
Look for:
- Rust streaks or peeling paint
- Gutters pulling away from fascia
- Water pooling around your foundation
- Ice dams in winter
- Overflowing during rainstorms
- Black, green, or mold-like growth on the gutters or siding (a sign of poor drainage and moisture buildup)
10. Can I install gutters myself?
Technically, yes (but we don’t recommend it). Installing gutters incorrectly can lead to poor drainage, water damage, or safety risks. Professional installation (we custom-fit our aluminum gutters on-site) ensures proper slope, secure fastening, and leak-free connections, which are especially important in Ontario’s freeze-thaw climate.
11. Isn't it better go to the 'Big Box' retailers to install gutters?
The honest truth: big-box stores often subcontract gutter installation. And on top of that, they likely use foreign-sourced aluminum for their eavestroughs. While advertised prices may appear low, they probably don’t offer the same premium materials, hand-mitred corners, and warranty-backed aluminum that we do. We use heavy-duty Canadian-made aluminum (Gentek, RBS, and Kaycan sourced) and back it with a 25-Year Manufacturer Warranty.
12. How do you estimate how much gutter you need?
We calculate your total linear footage based on your roofline, pitch, and layout. Add to that the number and placement of downspouts to ensure proper drainage. During your free estimate, we provide a clear breakdown of footage, components, and pricing.
13. How long do aluminum gutters last?
Well-installed aluminum gutters typically last 20–30 years, especially when paired with leaf guards like T-Rex® or DoublePro™. Proper installation and protection from clogs extend their lifespan and performance significantly.
14. When should I consider upgrading or replacing my eavestroughs and gutters?
Is your system cracked, pulling away, or overflowing? If so, you’re on the verge of serious water damage. Or maybe you’re looking to improve the look, quality, or colour of your gutters? We’ve got you. Our team will walk you through the process of a complete eavestrough replacement and upgrade, using Canadian-made aluminum backed by a 25-Year Manufacturer Warranty.
